I have to admit: Yesterday's historical screed about how Life, the Universe, and Everything are all connected took a lot out of me. During most of my life, I've derived a lot of comfort from a belief system that life is random, brutish, and short, and although we generate our own personal momentum, we're also at the mercy of the large Plinko board as we ricochet toward our ultimate fate-troughs.
Now I have to consider that Leonard Susskind and Brian Greene are on to something, and that we're all just oscillating, one-dimensional strings amid 26 spacetime dimensions that our primitive monkeybrains cannot perceive. Or that all life is like that Monster Mushroom in Oregon, where thousands of seemingly disparate sprouts splayed over 2,000 acres are all secretly connected by an expansive, fertile mulch.
Or, you know. Maybe it's all crap.
Either way, we're nearing the middle of the month, the Ides/HumpDay of NaBloPoMovember. As we set up our base camp, I'm readying my whiskers for the 2012 mustache's coming-out party. Perhaps we will all gaze on it and think that each whisker, on the millions of the planet's upper lips that are participating in Movember, is part of a hidden, enormous follicular mass that pumps its life-force through us all.
Which explains why we Movember-ers are such "fun guys."
